Barn fire destroys horse stables
Brighton, N.Y. -- A barn at Heberle Stables near Ellison Park caught fire around 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Multiple fire crews responded to the call, along with police and EMS.
It's my worst nightmare. I hear the fire engines coming down the hill and I'm like panicking, said Judith Farrell, whose horse Ronney lives at the stable. (I was) very relieved all the horses were safe. The horses that were closest to the fire they got out and turned up out in the upper pasture so they werent near the smoke because the smoke can hurt them more than the fire.
The barn that caught fire was mostly full of farm equipment and antique vehicles the owner fixed for a hobby.
Unfortunately, for the owner, he lost a lot of his equipment, said Brighton Fire Chief Stephen MacAdam. One of the workers lived in the barn. He lost his residence.
The worker wasnt home when the fire started, according to MacAdam, so crews fought the blaze from the outside.
But the fire wasnt the only obstacle crews faced. The closest fire hydrant was 200 yards away and frigid temperatures also made the fight challenging.
We are making ice, so we have the town out just doing some salt runs just out on Browncroft Boulevard, North Landing Road, said MacAdam. Our biggest concern is making sure our crews are safe, that they're not developing hypothermia.
Crews worked in 20-minute shifts taking turns warming up in the riding ring -- a place where horses like Ronney will be able to run in again.
