RPO to perform at Carnegie Hall

Rochester, N.Y. -- For the first time in 29 years, The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at Carnegie Hall.

The RPO is part of a prestigious music festival.

The opera is called "Merry Mount" and it's a feast for the eyes at Eastman Theater in Rochester.

But on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City, it will be something spectacular.

"It's recognized as the ultimate showplace for premiere classical musicians and symphonic ensembles," Charlie Owens, RPO president and CEO, said. "As I keep analogizing, this is like having our hometown team playing in the Final Four of the World Series."

"Merry Mount" was written by Howard Hanson, the longtime dean of the Eastman School of Music.

It debuted in February of 1934 and was met with rave reviews.

The RPO will be one of only six orchestras to perform at the spring for Music festival.

The RPO will perform May 7 at Carnegie Hall.

13WHAM News' Norma Holland will report from New York City.
