Deputies: Volunteer firefighter stole $50K from dept

Canandaigua, N.Y. - A Crystal Beach volunteer firefighter was arrested Thursday and accused of stealing more than $50,000 from the Crystal Beach Fire Department.

Michael Mason, 43, of Canandaigua, was arrested after an investigation with the Ontario County Sheriff's Oiffice and the New York State Comptroller's Office.

In April, deputies were notified of irregularities in purchases using the department's credit card and checking accounts.

An investigation revealed that from February 2011 to October 2013, Mason, who served as the treasurer of the department, stole more than $50,000 using the card and checking account for personal use.

Mason was arrested Thursday and charged wtih second-degree grand larceny.

An audit is still being conducted by the New York State Comptroller's Office, as the exact amount of stolen funds is still unknown.
