UR workers approve pay increase

Rochester, N.Y. - The union contracts for University of Rochester service workers will be increasing for the second year in a row.

The contracts covers about 1,700 employees, who work as patient care technicians, nursing unit secretaries, surgical assistants, food service workers, and other positions.

Under the current collective bargaining agreement, employees will receive a salary increase of 1.7 percent to 2.1 percent, depending on longevity.

The raise is retroactive to September 22, 2013.

The University also renewed its agreement to pay 100 percent of the employees health plan, with no increase to out-of-pocket costs.

Good benefits and wages have always been the cornerstone of our union contracts, Jerald Drain, an environmental service worker at the Medical Center. To achieve another contract agreement that continues to both makes it worth coming to work at the University of Rochester.

Service workers on UR campuses are members of SEIU local 200 United, while workers at the UR Medical Center and Strong Memorial Hospital are members of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.

Both union groups negotiated with UR officials.
