Lynne Maquat Wins 2014 ATHENA Award

Rochester, N.Y.- This years ATHENA award recipient is a scientist at the University of Rochester.

The Womens Council, a Rochester Business Alliance affiliate, picked Lynne Elizabeth Maquat, the Director for the Center of RNA Biology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, as the winner for 2014.

At the U of R, Maquat also serves as J. Lowell Orbison Endowed Chair and Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, School of Medicine and Dentistry.  

She was selected from 13 finalists based on her significant professional achievements, community service endeavors, and leadership in the advancement of other professional women.

In 2011, Dr. Maquat was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors possible for any scientist. She was elected for her exceptional research in working to discover new cellular pathways and clues to the molecular basis of human disease.

Dr. Maquat received the 2014 University of Rochester Presidential Diversity Award for her work with the Graduate Women in Science program and her commitment to mentoring women scientists and scientists-in-training.
