Drivers and residents react to 390 search

Gates, N.Y. -- The police search on Interstate 390 lasted for four hours on Thursday, forcing drivers to find alternate routes because of closed roads and bad traffic conditions.

Portions of Buffalo Road were shut down off and on, while it also handled much of the diverted traffic.

Even though the traffic was bad, drivers said that they felt safe while the police were out there. Residents in the area felt the issue was a little more disconcerting.

John Doerich owns woods that back up to the search area on 390. He said he remembers the first time part of 390 was closed due to a shooting investigation, last week after a separate incident near West Ridge Road in Greece.

"I said, 'Oh no, not a copy cat again,'" said Doerich. "I started looking from the house into the woods to see if I could see anything. But I saw nothing."

Monroe County sheriff's deputies on ATVs searched the walking paths near Doerich's home.

Though the search turned up little, nearby residents hope that the massive search sends a message.

"People around here who would do something like that, you want to have them caught," Doerich said. "So yeah, it concerns me very much."
