Family: Cody's death senseless

Rochester, N.Y. -- He was a father of two children and a man who was dearly loved.

Wednesday night, Rochester police said Tyler Cody, 30, was shot at least once outside Cedarwood Towers and died a short time later.

"He makes everybody laugh, smile," said Lushama Thomas, Cody's sister.

Loved ones said one of Cody's brothers lives at Cedarwood Towers. The shooting took place outside, near the parking lot, according to police.

"We just need justice, swiftly," added Thomas.

A man who identified himself as Cody's "best friend," said an altercation last summer may have led to Cody's eventual death. Cody's sister said she had reason to believe the same incident played a role.

"Out here, people don't think with their mind," said the man. "They think with (their) guns."

Cody was said to have had a troubled history, but had been making strides to shed his past.

"It's not easy to deal with," Thomas said. "We're going to grieve and mourn and do whatever God tells us to do from this point on."

North Winton Village Association and North East Main Neighbors United blamed management of the Cedarwood Towers for allowing this incident to happen.

"These people should be coming in and they should be guarding their buildings," said Mary Coffey, co-chair of NWVA.
