Farm bill could help NYS maple producers

Albany, N.Y. (AP) -- The bipartisan agreement on a massive farm bill this week includes a measure that will help New York state's maple syrup producers, according to Sen. Chuck Schumer.

Schumer said a measure he fought for in the bill would provide federal grants of up to $20 million annually to states that create programs to encourage private landowners to open up their trees to maple tapping.

Schumer said that while there are more than 280 million maple trees with syrup-tapping potential in New York, less than 1 percent of them are tapped.

The legislation would also provide grants to states for marketing and research.
