$2M OK for Niagara Falls parkway removal

Niagara Falls, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Power Authority has approved allocating $2 million for a project to remove portions of a parkway running along the rim of the Niagara Gorge.

The Niagara Gazette reports that the public authority's funding will be for engineering and environmental work for the initial phase of the Robert Moses Parkway project.

Last February, state officials announced a plan to replace a stretch of the four-lane parkway with a low-speed, two-lane thoroughfare that will be set back hundreds of yards from the gorge's rim to allow construction of a hiking trail and other access improvements.

The parkway was built in the 1960s with scenic views for motorists in mind. But now it's seen as contributing to the decline of the city of Niagara Falls.
