Gorge trails closed as crews clear ice, rocks

Ithaca, N.Y. (AP) -- Several trails in gorges in New York state parks in the Finger Lakes region remain closed as crews clear ice still lingering from the severe winter.

The Ithaca Journal reports that trails at Buttermilk Falls, Fillmore Glen, Robert H. Treman, Stonybrook and Watkins Glen state parks are all closed as crews make those safe for public access.

There are still large ice chunks clinging to the cliff walls in some gorges, increasing the danger from falling ice and rocks. Some trails still haven't been fully restored from the damage caused by heavy floods last August.

With the arrival of warmer weather bringing out more people to the parks, officials are advising them to heed trail closure signs and not venture into the gorges until they're officially reopened.
