Festival goers beat the heat Sunday

Rochester, N.Y. - As temperatures climbed to 90 degrees in Rochester Sunday, it was broiling in Tony Simone's Tuscan Woodfire Pizza catering food truck at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival.

"I wet the towel up and put it in the freezer and get it cold and then put it around my neck to stay cool," said Simone.

Festival-goers tried to keep their cool with fans, hats and shade.

"We're trying to drink lots of water, we're trying to drink lots of fluids and we got some misting fans so we're gonna be trying to do that too," said Sam Schrier.

Cool treats was a favorite among the crowd. Lots of water is what nurses at the Rochester General Hospital First Aid tent said is a must in these conditions.

"You can get dehydrated, overheated, best thing is to find shade," said Lisa Marino of RGH.

Despite the heat, the weather still gets the credit for a large turnout opening weekend.

Marc Iacona, Co-Executive Director of the festival, said this year's debut weekend was bigger than last year.

"This was the first time in 12 years that we've had an open-air free concert on East Ave. and Chestnut because of the Wegman family. So we normally would only have Gibbs Street, Eastman Theatre and then the club pass series, but this time we had an extra 20,000 people."
