Second chances for church in Wayne County

Marion, N.Y. – The Second Reformed Church in Marion, dedicated it’s new Youth and Education Center, Sunday.

In February of 2011, the roof of the building that had been owned by the church since the 1970s collapsed.

“What a day, what a day, what a day,” said Pastor Donald White, of the Second Reformed Church. “It is like a dream coming true.”

That dream was seeing the two years of hard work come to fruition.

Church leaders credit the congregation and the community for the hard work and dedication that it took to bring this building to life.

“That was my heart's desire that we would see this facility rebuilt,” said the building chairman Michael Davis.

Davis's father-in-law helped the church purchase the original building.

“When I was a young man growing up in this community, there were five churches in our community. Now there are only two," said Davis. "If we had not rebuilt it would have been a great loss to the community for all the activities this facility provided.”

“You know the Lord took away what we had and gave us something better, and that's what I see today," said Gary McLough, who has been a parishioner for 45 years.

Extra chairs were needed during Sunday’s dedication, as parishioners and people from the community filled the new building.

Sunday’s dedication sent a message of hope not only to those present but also to the community.

“It means the Second Reformed Church isn't leaving,” said Pastor White. “We're here to stay as long as the good lord will have us.”
