Strong storm along lakeshore

Rochester, N.Y. - A strong thunderstorm ripped alongside the Lake Ontario shore Friday night, leaving many without power, and swimmers and boaters in danger.

As of 10:30 p.m., over 7,100 RG&E customers in Monroe County were without power; nearly 6,000 in Wayne were also in the dark. Many of the outages occurred along the shore.

It was a busy night for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, as well as the Coast Guard.

Around 5:30 p.m., the Monroe County Sheriff's Office was investigating a drowning in Irondequoit Bay - that investigations was called off when the severe weather arrived around 7:30 p.m., and will resume Saturday.

The Coast Guard said many sailboats were struggling to make it to shore when the storm began to hit.

At Braddock Bay, three men had to be rescued from a raft about a quarter mile off short, the Coast Guard told 13WHAM News.
