590 Accident Witness: œIt was just in the air and over the bridge in a matter of seconds.

Brighton, N.Y. – “It was just really scary because the truck was such a big vehicle and it was just in the air and over the bridge in a matter of seconds,” said Colleen Kennedy, of Penfield.

Kennedy was three cars behind the tanker truck before it went over the concrete wall on the 490 ramp.

“At first I thought, wow it's amazing it didn't hit another car, because the way that they were tangled,” said Kennedy. “But then I saw the white part of the other box truck and I was like ‘oh my god, there is another one.’ One man started screaming one driver was alive and we had to go get him, we had to go get him out and save him. At this point I was still on the phone with 911.”

The driver of the tanker truck 25-year-old Daniel Baker was alive.

Bystanders pulled him out of the cab of his truck and away from the smoking vehicles.

“I started thinking I can’t just stand here this is a really bad situation,” said Kennedy. “The smoke started getting thicker and blacker and the smell kept getting stronger.”

“I hadn't even left the scene before I heard the sirens so police and first responders they absolutely were there momentarily.”

Kennedy drove away from the accident shaken, but all the more confidant in her decision to become nurse so that someday she could help someone in trouble.

“It just made me want to do it more,” said Kennedy. “It's just such a helpless feeling to know somebody is there and they're in trouble and even if I got down there, what am I supposed to do.”
