Beaches closed days ahead of holiday

Monroe County, N.Y. – It was a day to enjoy the sand.

“We assumed that the water was going to be closed,” said Lori Powers, who was at the beach with her family. “This is purely a sand day.”

Heavy rain caused the Durand Eastman Beach to close twice in the last three days. The rains increased bacteria too high to swim safely.

“If we get a really heavy rain or just south of here it gets a lot of heavy rain it all filters through the river and works its way through the streams and into Lake Ontario,” said John Picone, Athletics and Aquatics Coordinator for the City of Rochester.

As far as the 4th of July, it's too early to know what the water quality will be, said Picone.

“The 4th is a big day for us,” said Picone. “The weather looks like it's going to cooperate. It's supposed to be middle to upper 80s not as much rain later in the week.”

Last year Durand Eastman Beach was open for swimming 80-percent of the time.
