Wayne County prison to close

Red Creek, N.Y. – The State Department of Corrections announced Friday that it plans to close four prisons, including the medium security Butler Correctional Facility in Wayne County.

A spokesperson says a reduction in the number of drug offenders in those prisons is part of the reason for the closure.

The three other facilities closing are in Schuyler, Franklin, and Saratoga counties.  All four will remain open for another year for transitional purposes.

Butler employs about 60 people.  There had been an online petition to keep it open.
