Rochester hosts rowing event celebrating diversity

Rochester, N.Y. The Genesee River played host to youth rowing crews from all across the country Saturday.

The annual America Rows Diversity Invitational at Genesee Valley Park featured 100 rowers from six programs mixing teams and competing in several events.

The America Rows program raises awareness of the sport by introducing it to a broad range of Americans particularly those from urban areas.

Its the third straight year Rochester has hosted the event.

Richard Butler, USRowing inclusion manager, said the Flower Citys flat water and history make it a perfect host city.

Rochester just has such a rich history of civil rights, he said. To bring the Diversity Rowing Invitational -- a sport that was traditionally not very accessible to other Americans -- to bring it to a city like Rochester is important."
