Senators to work on problem of military sexual assaults

Washington - A bipartisan group of senators, including New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, will meet with female veterans today to discuss the problem of military sexual assaults and explore ways to deal with them.

Military chiefs say they are concerned that a proposal would strip a commander's power to "enforce justice" in sexual assault cases.

The latest Pentagon report estimates there were 26,000 sexual assault cases in the military in 2012 -- up from 19,000 the year before.
