B&L workers await layoff notices

Rochester, N.Y. -- They knew it was coming once Valeant Pharmaceuticals pushed to acquire Bausch Lomb, but that doesn't make the idea of layoffs any easier.

Up to 15 percent of the combined company's workforce could be cut, that may include some of the 1,500 local B &L workers in Rochester.

"Unfortunately, the circumstances when you are taken over by another company -- that creates and environment where you are looking for cost cutting measures, you are looking for profitability," said Douglas Hendee, CFP Vice President and Sales Manager at Brighton Securities.

13WHAM News spoke with four B & L workers at its North Goodman Global Eye Health Center.

None would speak on camera, nor did they wish to be identified by name. The group said they were waiting for mid-August, when layoff notices are expected.

Each of them said they hoped to continue their jobs developing products for B & L. Even when the layoffs are final and severance packages have been doled out, one employee said B & L will not be the same place.

"You don't have a job, you don't go out to eat," said Diane LaMartina, owner of LaMartina's restaurant which is located less than a block from North Goodman Street.

Her dining room was empty during the lunch hour.

"They won't come here, we got to start doing some cutting too," added LaMartina.
