Brighton bus driver charged with DWI
Brighton, N.Y. A Brighton school bus driver has been charged with DWI.
Police say 35-year-old Amini Kellum was drunk when she pulled the bus into a gas station on Mount Read Boulevard Wednesday morning and hit a railing which protects the gas pumps.
The district sent out a later to parents Wednesday saying a bus driver was arrested after dropping students off at a private school.
In an email parents received, Brighton School Superintendent Kevin McGowan said, We were deeply concerned and upset to learn today that a First Student bus driver was charged with DWI.
According to the email, a Brighton bus driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated while students were on the bus.
The superintendent's letter stated that the bus driver dropped the students off at school at 8 a.m. and drove to a gas station six miles down the road. Upon leaving the store, the driver allegedly had a difficult time exiting the parking lot. The police arrived on the scene and administered a sobriety test before filing charges.
McGowan said he contacted the parents of students on the bus and that it was the first day of school for these students.
The email also claimed that First Student has a zero tolerance policy, and the driver was allegedly fired following the incident.
