Ontario County nursing home sold
Canandaigua, N.Y. Ontario Countys nursing home will soon be privatized.
The countys board of supervisors voted Thursday night to sell the public health facility to a private company.
The deal requires state approval, which means the transfer could take place anywhere between 8 and 19 months.
The county sold the facility to Centers for Specialty Care for $2 million.
The supervisors who voted yes say the move is a wise fiscal move and is a reaction to the changing world of healthcare.
The facilitys county employees, however, say the sale will lead to layoffs and a drop in the quality of care.
We have residents who have been there for 10, 12, 15 years, they know the staff, said Deb Merklinger, who has worked at the facility for 7 years. People are going to die.
The workers also say there are no guarantees the nursing home will be open 10 years from now.
County administrator John Garvey says no ones healthcare will be jeopardized in large part because of state safeguards.
Its a heavily regulated business and there are always avenues available to care for people, Garvey said.
The union representing the county workers says it will likely file a lawsuit.
