As price of college goes up, so does federal aid

A new report from the National Center for Education Statistics found that 70 percent of undergraduate students received some type of financial aid in the 2011-2012 school year -- and more than half of those students got federal grants.

That's nearly double the rate of federal grants given just four years earlier.

But the number of students getting federal loans only went up about five percentage points in the same time frame.

Experts speculate that could be because of the recent scare over rising loan rates--which are now tied to the financial markets--and are therefore more volatile.
