New asthma treatment at URMC

Rochester, N.Y. -- Asthma patients will be able to breathe a bit easier thanks to a new procedure at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Bronchial thermoplasty helps reduce asthma symptoms, using heat.

Its the first of its kind - and a sign of hope for severe asthma patients.

The outpatient operation insets a catheter down a patients airways, heating up passages to about 140 degrees.

Dr. Sandhya Khurana with the Mary Parkes Asthma Center says the surgery works, reducing emergency room visits for severe asthma patients by 70 to 80 percent. Khurana says patients won't notice a difference right away but over time, but will after three surgeries.
