NYS ed commissioner sends own kids to private school

Rochester, N.Y. New York State Education Commissioner John King does not send his daughters to public school.

Instead, King has them enrolled in a private Montessori school.

King addressed this placement at a news conference in Rochester Wednesday.

He was asked if his decision to have his daughters attend a private school makes him the right leader to roll out the new Common Core Curriculum.

Montessor, like many non-public schools, participates in the state assessment system, but what matters is the caliber of instruction, King said. In many ways the Montessori school has many of the instructional practices that the Common Core emphasizes, so the focus, for example, on problem solving and mathematics that you see in the Common Core is very similar to the problem solving model you see in Montessori.
