"Big" lobsters to be sold in NY

Albany, N.Y. - New York will soon allow the sale of oversized lobsters legally caught in other states or countries.

The law, effective. Aug. 30, continues the restriction on the crustaceans caught in New York waters or taken elsewhere in violation of size limits.

It was intended to help replenish lobster populations depleted by warming waters and low oxygen in the water.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill this week, calling it a compromise that supports New York's restaurant and seafood businesses while allowing restoration of the state's coastal waters.

State officials say that unlike New York waters, lobsters continue to thrive elsewhere.

Larger lobsters have a greater capacity for breeding and reproduction.
