Child fighting cancer gets firehouse

Pittsford, N.Y. Kim Winter doesnt know how it happened, but at some point her 3-year-old son, Craig, developed an abiding love of fire trucks.

His spirits pick up around anything fire truck-related.

This even happened last year in those dark weeks after the chemo took hold.

This is a positive little guy, who absolutely loves fire trucks, Winter said.

So it may surprise you that when Make-A-Wish asked Craig what he wanted, he didnt say a fire truck.

No, he asked for a fire station.

Asked why, Craig said so he could help people.

Kids time and time again amaze us in their selflessness, said Mary Jones, Make-A-Wish Rochester Regional Director.

Saturday, six fire trucks from the Pittsford Fire Department rolled up Craigs street in Pittsford.

That would have been thrill enough, but waiting in Craigs backyard was a bright red, scaled down fire station.

Craigs Fire Station.

Within minutes, Craig had grasped the fire hose and stood at the ready.

Its not often we get to participate in something like this, said Pittsford Fire Chief Chris Howk. With all of Craigs challenges were happy to help.

Youll never how much youre loved until you or someone you love is diagnosed with cancer, Winter said.

Craig is now on his second round of chemo; this one targeting the tumors in his brain and on his spine.

He may have a future as a firefighter, hes a brave little kid, Winter said.

Craig is that kid who wants to fight fires even when hes fighting cancer.
