RFD: Second fire on Sherer St.

Rochester, N.Y. – The Rochester Fire Department confirms that another fire broke out Saturday afternoon on Sherer Street. This is the second fire on Sherer in three days.

Witnesses say they saw heavy smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters are calling Friday morning’s warehouse fire "suspicious." Neighbors called 911 just before midnight after seeing flames and smoke coming from an abandoned building on Sherer Street.

It took firefighters nearly an hour to get the flames out.

They say they've been called to this address several times in the past and believe many of the fires, including this one, could be arson.

"This building has been a problem for us, and it has been secured. There's a chain link fence on the doors, but somehow somebody did get in there,” said Dep. Chief John Kearney of the RFD.

“We've done everything we can to keep people out of this building, but we seem to be coming back here and fighting fires inside of it."

Firefighters say the city has considered tearing down the building but hasn't because it would be too expensive.
