Late-summer swimming safety tips
Albany, N.Y. (AP) - Some of New York state's top officials are urging swimmers to be especially careful when they go for a late-summer dip in New York's lakes and along the shore.
The parks commissioner and state health commissioner offer these tips:
- Swim only when lifeguards are on duty.
- Leave the water at the first sign of bad weather.
- Prepare for quickly changing currents, even in shallow water.
- Don't rely on flotation devices.
The officials say Long Island beaches are offering longer hours at several locations with lifeguards on duty.
