42 Same sex couples wed in Minn. by 12:01 a.m.

Minn./R.I. - Dozens of same-sex couples in Minnesota said "I do" very early the morning of August 1.

By 12:01 a.m., 42 same-sex couples were married at the Minneapolis City Hall.

That's when gay marriage became legal in Minnesota.

Ceremonies are also planned in Rhode Island and the District of Columbia

I'm glad that we did it now because we won't have a year of planning like the rest of the folks will, said one newlywed.

The national Gay Rights group "Freedom to Marry" estimates 30 percent of the U.S. population lives in states where gay marriage is legal.

In 2011, New York became the 6th and largest state to legalize gay marriage.
