Gay marriages to be recognized for tax purposes
Rochester, N.Y. The U.S. Department of Treasury ruled Thursday that legally married same-sex couples will be treated as married for federal tax purposes.
According to a White House press release, the ruling will apply even if a same-sex couple lives in a state or jurisdiction that does not recognize same-sex marriage.
The decision states that same-sex couples will be treated as married for all federal tax purposes, including income and gift and estate taxes.
The ruling does not apply to registered domestic partnerships or civil unions.
