Canandaigua man escapes flipped seaplane

Canandaigua, N.Y. - A Canandaigua resident narrowly escaped a flipped airplane Saturday morning.

The Ontario County Sheriffs Office said Joseph Bell, 71, landed his 1980 Cessna Model 185 seaplane in Canandaigua Lake around 9:30 a.m.

As Bell allegedly tried to take off again, the plane flipped over in the water. Bell was able to free himself from the plane and was rescued by nearby residents that witnessed the crash.

The Sheriffs office responded by boat shortly after the incident occurred and were able to secure the plane before it sank. No gas or oil leak occurred.

Bell did not have any injuries and was the only person on board at the time of the incident. The plane was towed to shore.
