Ford seen as culpable as it agrees to $17.4M fine

Dearborn, Mich. - Ford has agreed to pay a $17.4 million fine for delaying the recall of Ford Escape SUVs with gas pedals that could become stuck.

The fine is linked to the July 2012 recall of nearly 485,000 Ford Escape SUVs from the 2001 to 2004 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contends Ford knew about the problem in May 2011, but failed to take action until the agency began investigating in July 2012.

A probe began after a teenager in Arizona died in a crash while driving a Ford Escape in January 2012.

The settlement indicates that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes Ford knew of the problem for some time before telling them.
