NYS firefighters compete in old-fashioned drills
Spencerport, N.Y. Firefighters from across New York state gathered Saturday to turn back the clock a few centuries.
The Spencerport Fire Department hosted the 2013 New York State Firematic Old Fashioned Championship, featuring drills dating back to the 18th century.
Teams competed in several events, including foot races, ladder climbing and water bucket proficiency.
It was the first time a Western New York fire district hosted the event, which some firefighters treat as their Super Bowl and a chance to compete against others in the firefighting fraternity.
Its a combination of everything, said Mike Welton, a firefighter from Bay Shore on Long Island and past president of the Firemans Association of the State of New York. It's bragging rights, it's testing your skills and, more than anything, it's camaraderie. Everybody knows somebody here. You become friends -- the guys from Long Island become friends with the guys from Western New York. They drive 5-6 hours, they get to know each other, and it's all about friendship."
