Man killed pushing vehicle on 490

East Rochester, N.Y. -- A man was killed after being struck by a car Thursday night around 8:30 p.m.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Darren Manzella, 36, of Rochester, was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier westbound on 490 near 31F when he side-swiped a Nissan Sedan. Manzella then stopped in the middle lane of 490.

Upon stopping, Manzella got out of his vehicle and began pushing his car from behind when he was stuck and pinned by a SUV.

Manzella died at the scene.

Both drivers of the other involved vehicles were taken to Strong Hospital with minor injuries.

Manzella served in Iraq. He was an outspoken critic of  the "don't ask, don't tell" policy and advocated for its repeal.
