Changes Coming To Mega Millions

Irondequoit, N.Y. Get ready for more large jackpots with the Mega Millions lottery.

There are some changes in store for the popular lottery game starting October 22.

Officials are planning to lessen the chances of people winning the big jackpot, but increase the chances of winning a smaller secondary prize.

Mega Millions still the record for the largest jackpot in U.S. history a $656 million jackpot in March 2012, however, organizers are hoping to more regularly see huge jackpots like the Powerball lottery has seen in recent months.

Although she normally doesnt, Leona Rossi decided to play the Powerball Wednesday night because the jackpot was so big and says she more likely to buy a ticket when jackpots get to a large amount.

"I always see a story on Powerball and [the jackpot] is always so huge," Rossi said. "So I get excited and get a ticket, because you never know."

According to the Associated Press, the changes also include boosting the starting jackpot from $12 million to $15 million, and allowing the jackpot to grow by at least $5 million between drawings when no top winner is selected.

Ezekiel Allen says the bigger jackpots and more frequent jackpots will be better for Mega Millions.

"l think it makes it more fun," he said. "That's why they call it the Mega Millions. So if you win, you want to win big."

Mega Millions officials say there are no plans to increase ticket prices yet, although, Powerball did raise their prices to $2 per ticket in 2012.
