Police: Drunk driver crashes through church recreation center

Scottsville, N.Y.A 22-year-old man was arrested for driving while intoxicated Friday morning after allegedly crashing his vehicle into a church building.

Police believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he went through a stop sign on Chili Avenue, jumped the curb in front of the church lawn, and crashed through the rear wall of Hartmann Hall.

A construction crew temporarily sealed the giant hole left by the vehicle. Pieces of wood, smashed brick and plaster could be seen inside the hall. There was damage to the ceiling and a second wall.

It happened at about 1:30 a.m. Friday morning at Hartmann Hall, which is part of the St. Mary of the Assumption church in Scottsville.

My children have had wedding rehearsal dinners here, you know, Im sort of sick about the whole thing, said Jeanne Arthur, a parishioner.

The man whose name was not released, was charged with DWI and could receive traffic tickets, according to a spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriffs office.

He was transported to a hospital as part of a mental hygiene arrest. He did not suffer any serious injuries.

Three parishes share Hartmann Hall.

Its unclear how much it will cost to repair the hole in addition to damage to the walls and ceiling.
