Wings celebrate playoff berth

Rochester, N.Y.It was a typical playoff celebration, for a team that is not used to getting there. On Monday, Rochester defeated Scranton Wilkes-Barre 13-3.

After the final out was recorded at Frontier field, the Red Wings, as improbable as it seemed when the season began, had earned a wild card berth.

These guys were really struggling, and we pulled it out, said Randy Stiefler, a season ticket holder.

The Red Wings won two of their first 13 games to start the season, but after seeing their closest competitors for the wild card fall, they took full advantage.

Its amazing, its great to be a part of a winning team, said pitcher Pat Dean.

After a pig-pileup on the infield, the team took to their locker room where the celebration ramped up a few notches.

Cases of champagne were unloaded and sprayed all over managers, players, even ball boys.

We havent made the playoffs since 2006, so to get back is uh, a lot of fun, said General Manager Dan Mason, moments before having a fresh bottle of Andre poured over his head.

Playoff tickets were on sale following the game.

Rochester will host the Pawtucket Red Sox on Wednesday night at 7:05.

Scary Moment.

Midway through the game, two fans were struck by the same baseball, according to witnesses.

One fan was hit directly in the forehead and had to go to the hospital.

Team management said his injuries were not serious.

He was actually doing pretty well, said Mason. Went to the hospital on his own.
