Sailboat sunk to bottom of the Erie Canal

Rochester, N.Y. A boat sunk to the bottom of the Erie Canal Saturday morning.

A 39-foot Bavareia sailboat was sailing west on the Erie Canal when it struck a bridge abutment, or support.

According to the Wayne County Sherriffs Office, the driver, Frederick Cooley, 74, was steering the vessel around a piece of debris when a passenger entering the cabin blocked his view.

According to the report, by the time Cooley noticed the abutment it was already too late.

The sailboat apparently struck the abutment and damaged the hull. Cooley and the passenger were able to escape the boat before it sank to the bottom.

Authorities said a salvage company would retrieve the boat.
