Neighbors devastated by infant's death

West Sparta, N.Y.  -- An 18-month-old boy was hit by a truck and killed in his grandparents driveway on Woodsville Road Friday.

According to Livingston County investigators, Jonathan Jamisons death was an accident, a real tragedy felt by the entire community.

Its devastating; I cant image what the family is going through, neighbor Theresa Polmanteer said.

Polmanteer, who lives next door to the boys grandparents, said the entire neighborhood is in shock.

It was a tragic accident because they watch those kids good, Polmanteer said. I mean, theyre not even allowed to come into this yard. They have to stay right in grandpas yard.

Neighbors said Jamison and his older brother spent a lot of time at their grandparents house. Polmanteer said she just saw the toddler playing with his grandpa Friday afternoon.

I seen him with Jonathan, Polmanteer said. He was sitting on his lap while he was mowing the lawn.

Polmanteer said the boys parents and grandparents always kept a close eye the two boys, but somehow Jamison got in front of a truck in the familys driveway.

Police identified the driver as family friend and neighbor, George Mower. The 44-year-old man had stopped by the grandparents home, and when Mower started to pull out of the Jamisons driveway, he hit the 18-month-old.  Investigators said Mower was unable to see the toddler in front of his truck.

Jamisons parents took the boy to Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, where he was pronounced dead.

He feels terrible, Polmanteer said. I'm sure it will affect him dearly.

No charges have been filed. Investigators said, from all accounts, this appears to be a freak, tragic accident.
