Closing arguments underway in Jackson trial
Los Angeles, California (AP) - A lawyer for Michael Jackson's family has asked a Los Angeles jury to act as the conscience of the community and award damages for the loss of the pop star's life.
The attorney for the Jackson family delivered his closing argument Tuesday in a packed courtroom, explaining why jurors should believe that concert promoter AEG Live was responsible for hiring the doctor whose actions led the star's death.
The attorney played videotapes of testimony from the 21-week trial and said it's clear that AEG hired Dr. Conrad Murray, even though the contract with him may have been more oral than written.
He said AEG Live decided to take a risk without investigating Murray's background because they were anxious to launch lucrative concerts.
AEG claims it was Jackson who decided to hire Murray as his personal doctor.
At stake is potentially a billion dollars for the Katherine Jackson and Michael's three children.
The damage amount is a sum to reflect what Michael Jackson could have earned from his comeback tour had he survived.
