Judge beaten, left hospitalized
Waterloo, N.Y. No arrests yet, but Waterloo police say the village justice viciously beaten Saturday night is talking with them. Justice Roger Barto was leaving court around 10:15 p.m. Saturday evening, when police say a person tried to strangle him, then hit him over the head and neck area with a toilet tank cover.
I think its a little shocking for such a small community, said Lewis Valerio, a friend of the Barto family.
These kinds of events are a little unusual.
While Barto had just finished an arraignment committing a man to jail prior to being beaten Waterloo police do not believe the assault and arraignment were connected.
Were not discounting anything, but dont believe that had any connection at all, said Doyle Marquart, Chief of Police for the Village of Waterloo.
Barto had been on a ventilator, but it was removed Monday night, according to Dean Mattoon, the villages other justice.
The injured judge is already contemplating when hell be able to return to the bench, according to Mattoon.
No arrests have been made, though police say they are following leads.
