Robots will be mixing meds at URMC

Rochester, N.Y. - The University of Rochester Medical Center will soon be counting on technology to mix IV medications in the hopes of ensuring accuracy.

The technology is in the form of robots, about the size of a vending machine.

URMC's pharmacy director, Curtis Haas said, The use of this technology will increase our efficiencies so that we can more effectively do that, it will also increase our quality standards here and not rely on upon anybody outside the hospital.

He added that the department won't just rely on the machines.  It will also serve as a checks and balance system, ensuring workers are compounding correctly.

The robots are expected to arrive later this year and be up and running in early 2014. Just in time, as the hospital's pharmacy expands into its new wing by the end of this year.
