Local vets honor POW/MIA Recognition Day
United States-- The United States National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed across the nation on the 3rd Friday of September.
Today, many Americans take time to remember those who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who are missing in action (MIA). Congress passed a resolution authorizing a national day of recognition for POWs and MIAs in 1979.
In 1986, the date was moved to the 3rd Friday in September to ensure a national commemoration of the day.
The Monroe County Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a commemorative ceremony Friday.
The event will be at Ontario Beach Park at the end of Lake Avenue. The event begins at 7 p.m.
