Hundreds walk out of darkness to prevent suicide

Rochester, N.Y. Hundreds of people whose lives have been impacted by suicide took some steps to try and prevent it Sunday.

The annual Out of the Darkness Walk at Genesee Valley Park helped support suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

Sarah Clark from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention said one of the biggest challenges in the fight against suicide is the stigma associated with mental illness.

Ninety percent of people who do die by suicide have a mental health disorder at the time of their death, Clark said. It is 100 percent preventable to try to make it better and try to do something about it and try to make a change."

If you or a loved one needs help, you can call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK.
