WW II vet's lost medals returned to his family

Rochester, N.Y. (AP) - A long-lost Purple Heart, Bronze Star and other military medals awarded to a severely wounded World War II veteran from Rochester have been returned to his family.
Theresa Caparco of the Genesee County town of Alabama received her father's medals from the Rochester firefighter who found them.
Family members say Chester Caparco had to undergo numerous reconstructive surgeries after a land mine blew off his jaw while he served in a combat unit in the Philippines in 1945.
Relatives say Caparco's second wife threw away his medals after he died in Florida 20 years ago.
Firefighter Steve Ersteniuk stumbled across Caparco's medals at a suburban Rochester auction house in January 2012. He tracked down Theresa Caparco, who wept when he handed over the medals Wednesday.
