Shooter showed no emotion killing 12 people

Washington - Police believe the man suspected of killing 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard Monday acted alone.

Aaron Alexis, 34, was killed in a firefight with police.

Investigators say Alexis had no accomplices and showed no emotion when he shot and killed 12 people and injured eight others.

He was discharged from the Navy in 2011 following a pattern of misconduct.

Alexis had just started working for the Navy Yard again last week and had valid security clearance.

Friends say he was a practicing Buddhist. But he also has a history of run-ins with the law, including a 2010 arrest for recklessly discharging a firearm.

He just didn't seem that kind of person that would be that upset and go out and do something like this, said his former boss Kristi Suthamtewakul. That's why we are confused.

While some survivors returned late Monday night to collect their things, others were mourning at a candlelight vigil.

President Obama ordered flags at the White House and all public buildings and military and naval posts to be flown at half-staff through Friday.
