Should a curfew go in at Irondequoit Regal Cinemas?

Irondequoit, N.Y. Its been a while since Clemond Daniels has been to a movie at the Irondequoit Regal Cinemas during the weekend at night.

He says he usually catches the matinees or weekday shows.

You really can't enjoy a movie anymore especially after 7:00 p.m., he said. It's just not worth it.

Daniels believes that the crowds at the theater on weekend nights tend to be younger, unsupervised and rowdier.

So it doesnt surprise him to hear that a large fight broke out inside the theater on Friday night during a screening of Insidious: Chapter Two.

The Irondequoit Police Department says that about 400 to 500 people were involved in the fight, and they were first made aware that a fight might happen after the film through a tip from a private citizen. By the time IPD got the tip, the movie had already started.

We had information that this might occur, but had no reason to evacuate the theater at that particular point, explained Deputy Chief Richard Tantalo. That's a management decision on part of the Regal theater.

However, Tantalo says his IPD officers were in place outside of the theater to control the crowds.

We deployed our resources so that when the movie showing let out we would be properly prepared and we were, Tantalo said. But unfortunately, it occurred inside of the theater. We don't patrol inside of the theater.
There were no injuries during this incident and one person, a juvenile, was arrested on disorderly conduct charges.

Most of the people involved in the fight were under the age of 16 and were at the theater without the parental supervision.

Tantalo stresses that the Irondequoit Regal Cinemas is not a problem spot but says during the opening weeks of horror or action movies seem to draw a younger, unsupervised crowd.

Supervisor Mary Joyce DAurizio says parents need to take more responsibility of their children and says the movie theater management needs to look at possibly putting a curfew in place.

I would definitely support a curfew, DAurizio said. It's unfortunate that the municipalities or companies have to resort to parenting because parents dont assume that role.

She says that incidents like Fridays hurt Irondequoits image and DAurizio says she plans pursuing this issue aggressively. She is consulting with the towns lawyers to see what powers the town has to ask Regal to set a curfew.

The Regal Cinemas in Greece already has a curfew in place and the Greece Police Department tells 13WHAM that incidents at the theater have been down since the curfew policy went in.

Daniels would also like to see a curfew in place.

[The kids] get dropped off, he said. It's not like they come with their parents . It's like a daycare now. It's out of hand.

In a statement to 13WHAM, a Regal Cinemas spokesperson said:
We cannot publicly discuss details related to our security measures due to obvious safety reasons. We partner with local authorities to ensure, to the fullest extent possible, a positive moviegoing experience each and every visit. Rest assured that the safety and security of both our guests and staff are of the utmost importance and our number one priority.

Tantalo says since the theater is a private business, IPD has no control over whether a curfew is set. However, he says IPD is working with Regal to devise more protocols and safeguards to avoid these type of situations from occurring again.
