Police arrest teen in Greece park assault

Rochester, N.Y. -- Greece Police announced an arrest in Wednesday night's assault in a Greece Park right next to the police substation off Maiden Lane.

Greece Police said Jacob Cary, 18, is accused of assaulting an 18-year-old male in Barnard Park.

Captain Pat Phelan told 13WHAM News the victim was knocked unconscious during the crime.

Police said the victim is now conscious and cooperating with the investigation.

Around 8:00 Wednesday night someone was in the park near the playground and found the victim.  That passerby then called police.

The victim was taken to the hospital. His name has not been released.

The location of the crime surprised some neighbors as it's right next to the police substation and is a park many families use.

Captain Phelan said, "A lot of people utilize it to play tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, walk in the park, walk their dog, so it's surprising we had an incident in the park. It's a very safe park, a very nice park."

He added that up until now, vandalism was the only problem in Barnard Park.

Cary was charged with first-degree assault. Police said Cary is the only suspect and no further arrests are expected.

No word on a possible motive.
