Six Months Later: Boston Bombing Victims are Engaged
Webster, N.Y. - It's been six months since the bombings at the Boston Marathon - and while victims still heal - one local couple is stronger than ever.
The DiMartino family was cheering on their mother at the finish line of the Boston Marathon - when a blast went off, injuring Peter DiMartino and his girlfriend Rebekah Gregory.
I really thought I was going to die that day, said Gregory when asked about the bombings. When we exchanged I love yous on the sidewalk, because we were laying right next to each other, I really thought that that might be the last time that I would get to say that to him.
I think that since then, I think it's kind of made me realize that she's really and amazing woman she's very strong, said DiMartino, the stuff that I dealt with was bad, but her injuries were much worse than mine and the way that she's carried herself through all this and dealt with it just showed me how incredible she is and I want to be a part of her life.
DiMartino proposed to Gregory.
It was a complete surprise number one, I didnt think I was going to see him for another month, said Gregory. Pete came down the stairs I couldnt believe he was there, and no sooner then he came down the stairs and gave me a hug he was down on one knee proposing and I was like what are you doing, you know, whats going on right now, so it was definitely a shock and a surprise.
Gregory still has a long road ahead of her. She's had 14 surgeries on her left leg and has another one scheduled for next month.
We don't know how much function I'll actually have, said Gregory, but we're hopeful and the doctors have said they're going to try to keep it right now and if not I'll have to get a prosthetic and we'll deal with that when it comes.
DiMartino's Achilles tendon is healing and he's had surgery on his ear drum - he's hopeful he'll regain some of his hearing.
There's more good days than bad days, explained Gregory, just because we're so thankful we're still here and get to tell our story to people and potentially inspire others, if that's the gift that we've been given through all this.
DiMartino and Gregory are building a house in her home state of Texas.
