First confirmed case of flu in Monroe County

Rochester, N.Y. - The first confirmed flu case is reported was reported in Monroe County this week, just as health officials realized there was an issue with the supply of flu vaccine locally.

Doctors have run out of the vaccine and haven't been able to re-order because several distributors don't have any.

Nancy Adams, of the Monroe County Medical Society said this caught the Flu Vaccine Coalition by surprise. They were not ancipating any shortages of the vaccine.

While Adams stopped short of calling this a shortage, she told us, the supply is dwindling and for people who cannot get the shot, this is a shortage.

The Medical Society is encouraging people to get flu shots and if they cannot get them from their doctor, check with local pharmacies and urgent care centers.

Adams said there is no way to know when the supply will run out, so people should get vaccinated.

She said this isn't a production issue, but a distribution issue telling 13WHAM: "I think we have to figure out where is this vaccine and how to get it to doctors."

She said it is not tied to the government shutdown.

It's too early to tell how well this vaccine will protect against this strain of the flu.
